On Saturday, November 16th, we had the honor of attending the Vela Muxe de Las Intrépidas Buscadoras del Peligro in Juchitán de Zaragoza, the heart of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a region proudly Zapotec. This unique celebration, which joyfully and proudly honors diversity, marked its 49th year, solidifying its place as an iconic event that exalts the freedom to be oneself and celebrates the richness of local traditions.
We were invited by our dear friend Estrella, who, in addition to being an exceptional host, graced the cover of Vogue México y Latinoamérica in 2019. Her charisma and hospitality guided us through the most special moments of this grand celebration, which honors the muxes—individuals recognized as a third gender within Zapotec culture. Muxes hold a special place in this society.
The vela spans several days, with highlights like the "fruit tossing" on Friday, November 15th. During this event, hosts paraded through the streets of Juchitán distributing gifts, filling the atmosphere with music and joy. It was the perfect prelude to the grand night on Saturday, where attendees were welcomed with vibrant performances, traditional Isthmus attire, and extravagant outfits—true works of art celebrating freedom of expression.
This year, another incredible host was Salma, with whom we had the privilege of witnessing the meticulous and detailed process of getting ready for the big night. We watched as Salma was transformed into the center of attention by the patient and skilled hands of Victoria López, whose extraordinary aesthetic vision created a stunning look. Salma’s traditional Isthmus attire, paired with impeccable hair and makeup, was a true spectacle and a homage to Zapotec cultural heritage.
Entry to the event involved tradition as well: men brought a carton of beer, while women offered a donation to the hosting booth. In our case, we decided to bring mezcal Alma de Judas—a gesture that turned out to be a huge success. Its distinctive flavor and irreverent spirit won over the attendees.
One of the most exciting aspects of the event was the opportunity to connect with people from around the world, reflecting how the vela’s growing international presence has enriched this tradition. Learning about the muxe identity and its significance within Zapotec culture was profoundly inspiring. This event not only celebrates diversity but also honors the pride and resilience of the cultural roots that sustain this wonderful region.
The Vela Muxe de Las Intrépidas Buscadoras del Peligro is a powerful reminder that inclusion, the freedom to be oneself, and respect for traditions are values we should embrace and celebrate. We left Juchitán with hearts full of gratitude, respect, and admiration for this culture that teaches us so much. May the muxes and their indomitable spirit continue to shine!
